How Long Does a Hairless Guinea Pig Live

How Long Does a Hairless Guinea Pig Live?

Posted on

Hairless guinea pigs, or “skinny pigs,” usually live between 7 to 8 years. But this can change based on how well they are cared for. Just like people, guinea pigs’ lives depend on many things. Let’s look at what affects their lifespan and how to make sure they live a long, happy life.

Guinea pigs’ lifespans can be influenced by several things:

Genetics: Like other animals, guinea pigs can have shorter or longer lives depending on their breed and genes.

Diet: A balanced diet helps them live longer. Fresh vegetables, fruits, and guinea pig pellets are good choices. Avoiding unhealthy food is important.

Environment: Guinea pigs that live indoors in comfortable surroundings tend to live longer. Clean cages and lots of space to run around keep them happy.

Care: Good care includes regular vet visits and making sure they don’t get sick. Diseases like respiratory infections or obesity shorten their lives.

Female Guinea Pigs and Breeding

If you have female guinea pigs, avoid breeding them. Breeding takes a toll on their bodies. Female guinea pigs used for breeding might only live 3.5 years. The risks of pregnancy are high, with about 20% of female guinea pigs not surviving. If you keep female guinea pigs, it’s best to house them with other females. This way, they live longer and happier lives.

Sometimes, guinea pigs from pet stores don’t live long because they weren’t well cared for before you got them. Adoption from a rescue or buying from a known breeder is often better. Pet store animals can be unhealthy, leading to high vet bills and shortened lives. So, choosing the right place to get your guinea pig matters.

If you want your guinea pig to live a long life, good husbandry is key. This means:

Balanced Diet: Make sure they eat healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, and pellets.

Exercise: They need space to move. Indoor cages are fine, but make sure they have a chance to explore outdoors too.

Socializing: Guinea pigs should not live alone. They need other guinea pigs for company, but keep males and females apart unless neutered. Intact males may fight.

Weather Protection: In cold weather, make sure their living space is warm. If you keep them outdoors, cover their hutch in the winter and bring them indoors when it’s freezing.

One guinea pig owner had pigs that lived until they were 6 years old. Her friend had one that lived 9 years, which is quite old for a guinea pig. On the other hand, books often say guinea pigs live only 3 to 4 years. So, there is no simple answer.

Long-Term Commitment

When you get a guinea pig, it’s important to remember that they can live up to 14 years, though most live between 5 and 7 years. Wild guinea pigs usually live only 1 to 4 years. This shows how much better domestic guinea pigs are cared for. They are lucky to have such long lives when they live with humans.

A Record-Breaking Guinea Pig

Did you know the oldest guinea pig lived almost 15 years? Snowball, a guinea pig from England, lived to 14 years and 10 months. This is an amazing lifespan for a guinea pig. Snowball is even in the Guinness Book of World Records.
