Hairless guinea pigs, often called “skinny pigs,” are sensitive animals that need special care, especially when it comes to temperature. Their lack of fur makes them more vulnerable to changes in the environment than guinea pigs with fur. Here’s how you can keep your hairless guinea pig safe and warm.

Why Hairless Guinea Pigs Need Heat

Unlike guinea pigs with fur, hairless guinea pigs don’t have a natural layer of protection. This missing layer of fur makes them very sensitive to cold and drafts. Imagine walking outside without clothes on a chilly day—you’d feel the cold much faster. That’s how hairless guinea pigs feel. They can get cold quickly and may even become ill if not kept in the right environment.

Skinny pigs need a room temperature of about 72–75°F (22–24°C). This keeps their bodies warm enough since they lack insulation. Cold drafts can be dangerous for them. So, it’s important to keep their living area cozy and draft-free.

Keeping Your Skinny Pig Warm

A normal guinea pig can manage its body temperature better because of its fur. Hairless guinea pigs need extra warmth, especially in cooler months. If you’re wondering how to provide that warmth, here are a few ideas:

Use a Space Heater

A small space heater works well to warm up a corner of your guinea pig’s cage. The oil-filled ones are the safest option, as they don’t start fires and are not too hot. Place the heater nearby, but not too close, to avoid overheating.

If you want to provide warmth without direct contact, ceramic heat lamps are safe. They are often used for reptiles and don’t cause burns or house fires like older heat lamps. Set the lamp in a corner, so the pig can move away if it gets too warm.

Heat for Sick Skinny Pigs

When a hairless guinea pig is sick, heat becomes even more important. A guinea pig’s body temperature should be around 103°F (39°C). If your guinea pig gets cold during an illness, it can struggle to heal or even die. By keeping the environment warm, the guinea pig can focus on getting better instead of using all its energy to stay warm.

Using a brooder lamp is a good option for warming a sick piggy. But be careful! These lamps get very hot, so they should be placed a few feet away from the cage to avoid burns.

Sun Sensitivity

Hairless guinea pigs are also very sensitive to the sun. Their skin can burn easily, just like humans without sunscreen. However, human sunscreen is not safe for guinea pigs because their skin reacts badly to it. The best solution? Keep your guinea pig out of direct sunlight. If they do go outside, make sure it’s only for a short time and in a shady area.

Signs of Overheating

While heat is necessary, too much heat can be dangerous. Watch out for signs like heavy breathing, lying flat, or red, clammy skin. If your guinea pig shows any of these signs, they might be too hot, and you should reduce the temperature immediately.

Keeping Guinea Pigs Warm in Winter

In the winter months, it’s especially important to keep your hairless guinea pig warm. Extra bedding like hay and fleece helps a lot. You can also use weatherproof covers to keep drafts out of their living space.

If you have to move them outside, ensure they are in a well-insulated hutch, away from the cold winds, rain, and snow. Always provide plenty of hay for warmth and change it regularly to keep it dry.
